Thread: Shutter angles?

    Question

I've heard of narrow shutter angles (45 or 90
degrees) and wider shutter angles (200 or 220
degrees) and I understand how these angles
    effect image sharpness and clarity.
Is there such a thing as operating a film
camera without a shutter? If so, would'nt
this be the same as a 360 degree shutter?
Does this give a "ghosting" effect as the
film is pulled-down for the next frame of
    exposure in the camera?

Yep! Its leaving the shutter open. Remember the shutter angle also refers to the amount of time the frame is exposed - the wider the longer.

Some cams, like the Nizos, have this option.

some high speed cameras used for motion study don't have shutters. they use prizms that track the film off the aperture gate.

    Just a little correction.
The Nizo's DON'T have this option.

They have a 220 degree shutter, which is open for a longer than normal amount of time, but certainly not the ability to go to 360 degrees, and also not a variable shutter.
It's a static, unchangeable shutter opening.
The Nikon R-10 has a variable shutter, but it goes from I think 180 degrees, down to closed.

Some (silent) Nizo models really have a variable shutter. The model "professional". The shutter selector is near the handle, at the bottom of the camera body. The Nikon had it and the Leicina, too. And nearly all Beaulieu models.

Nizo DO have a variable shutter angle. I have one. Its the 'S' series cam. They are the silent silver Nizo cams.

Anyways, he was asking if there is a way to operate without the shutter, basically keeping them open. The Nizo 'S' series (Pro, 800, 801, etc) can. Its right next to the handle. You can use to fade manually, get a half open shutter, closs it (0 degree) or keep it open.

No one really knows the 'S' series real shutter size - I have read guesses of 150. I am inclined to believe since my Nizo Proffesional and 6080 have a meter difference of about 1/2 stop each time.
